Polish European swimming champion Otylia Jedrzejczak is the country’s sole medallist to date at the ongoing world championships in Barcelona. On Thursday she emerged from the woman’s 200m butterfly final with a gold medal to add to her silver over 100m earlier in the week, to steal Polish hearts for the second year running.
At last year’s European championships Otylia also brought home gold and a new world record over 200m. Her time then of 2,05.78 is well ahead of the fastest times recorded at Barcelona, and her victory this time came literally in the final stroke.
Otylia’s chief weakness, as she admits herself, remains starting. In the 100m final she was slowest off the blocks and had to swim a phenomenal second lap to pull herself into medal position. But over 200m the 180cm-tall Polish girl’s long reach counts for more and – along with her lucky red swimming cap – was enough for victory on Thursday evening.
